Last year i.e 2012 Jane & I decided to homeschool our children. We started with absolutely zero knowledge of what it means to homeschool and stuff but we just believed that it was what God wanted us to do. It’s a big learning experience for us as well and we are thoroughly enjoying every bit of it.
We get to spend a lot of time with him at home, talking to him, playing with him & teaching him at his pace. No pressure of learning at all. Unlike most people’s opinion that homeschool kids are not very social, I think he is growing up to be more socially active than both of us. He can make friends in minutes, no age bar for him.
What we’ve noticed is that the children of his age going to school are already a step ahead of him in reading, writing & stuff like that, and there seems to be a pressure for us to catch up with the other kids, but honestly speaking both of us are not really worried about that. The last thing we want for our children is to compete with anybody. We don’t learn to compete with others, we learn to gain knowledge & understanding, and with the growth of technology the level of competition seems to be changing every year. I was introduced to computers when I reached my 10th grade, now children are taught programming languages from 7th grade onwards.
Anyways, as of now our focus is to teach him good habits & basic skills. Habits like obedience, mannerisms etc & skills like drawing, crafts, skating etc & Jairus seems to be loving it all. The toughest one is teaching him obedience, yes we do struggle with that but praying and believing that God will give us wisdom to bring them up well & raise a generation that seeks to follow their heart with complete Liberty.
